It is a Preliminary Notice which must be sent within 20 days of first furnishing labor and/or materials to a project in California. A late notice can be sent after 20 days, but it will only cover work done 20 days back. For example, if work started on the 1st of May and you sent the notice on the 25th of May, it will only cover work from the 5th of May forward.

A Claim of Lien can be recorded any time after completion of the General Contractor, Subcontractor or Supplier's work and up to 90 days after completion of the entire work. However, if a notice of completion or cessation is recorded the time is reduced to 30 days for the subcontractor and supplier.

If you miss sending your preliminary notice in California, you will not be allowed to file a lien in case of non-payment. Therefore, it is important to send your notice on time.
