General contractors must serve the owner and file a Notice of Lien and Sworn Statement with the registrar’s office in Tennessee within 90 days after completion of the residential project.

Before the filing of a Notice of Lien and Sworn Statement, a remote contractor must properly give a Notice of Nonpayment within ninety (90) days of the last day of each month within which labor or work was provided or materials, services, equipment, or machinery were furnished. Example: You performed work in January sometime between the 1st and the 30th. You must give File Claim on Bond by April 30th. You also performed work in February sometime between the 1st and the 28th. You must give the next notice no later than May 28th.

Though sending a Preliminary Notice it is not strictly required, the best business practice is to send one anyway as a subcontractor on a state job in Tennessee.
